Colorado Children’s Theater
May 13th, 2008 by Patricia
Being both a (semi) retired theatrical costumer and a children’s writer, I have a natural affinity for children’s theater. Which is why, when I heard a few years ago that a very talented woman, Sara Brown of the
in Denver, was looking for books by Colorado children’s authors to adapt into plays, I offered my early chapter book, Dragon Dilemma, as a possibility. It was first of the many successful productions that Shoestring has done. The next summer, in my home town of Paonia Colorado, my friend Lisa, who loves doing children’s theater, did a second production of the play.
Seeing my story come alive on the stage was amazing. What was really fascinating was seeing how unique each production was. Same script, but a completely different interpretation. But, isn’t that the way with everything we write? Each reader has his or her own interpretation of the story. It’s as if we wrap a bunch of presents with the same paper, but inside is a unique gift for each person. I know that’s part of the excitement of writing for me.
